CINF is a proud sponsor and partner of The Marshall Institute for Ethical Thought & Action (MIETA). The MIETA was established in order to encourage and foster logical and ethical thinking in the American youth. Beginning at Manhattanville College, MIETA organized the yearly Regional High School Ethics Bowl held by the Manhattanville Philosophy Department. More recently, the Institute launched programs to enhance the Bowl. These include workshops for high school students, courses for high school teachers and principals, regular Intramural Ethics Bowls for college undergraduates, and internships for college students. In this new year, the Institute will organize new events and internships: a yearly Conference on concrete ethics for secondary school teachers and principals, college internships for High School Seniors, a Junior High School Ethics Bowl, and an International Ethics Bowl.
Mission
Dedicated to loving wisdom and seeking truth, MIETA offers the resources and opportunities to discuss troubling topics and reason through them. Instead of simply reacting to the world emotionally, and shutting down our minds, we can think about the events that are taking place in our lives and in the world around us, and then respond to them. The Ethics Bowl is a perfect practice ground for learning how to think before we act. It is also the perfect practice ground for learning how to speak to each other about difficult issues. The Ethics Bowl deals with the essence of civil discourse: critical thinking. To understand one another, we must listen and think through what others say. To express ourselves effectively, we must analyze what we believe and why. These basic skills require careful thought in order to excel. These skills form the basis of our communities and our society.
Vision
To make America a thinking nation.
In friendship, MIETA aims to gather students to engage in free discussion, even if participants disagree respectfully. MIETA works to cultivate a community where thoughts can be shared with open-mindedness and lack of judgment, envisioning a nation where individuals can set aside their differences to communicate, collaborate and unify to make America great.
An Ethics Bowl is a competitive event in which teams of students must articulate their thoughts on ethical issues and discuss them with their peers.
As organized by MIETA at Manhattanville College, the Bowl is a multi-generational event, wherein high school students compete, undergraduate students moderate and judge, and philosophy professors and alumni supervise. This structure provides a forum for both high school and college students to reflect on and discuss what is right and why.
Logical rigor is insisted upon, as is taking a decisive stance on political, social, and cultural problems. The Bowl promotes substantive dialogue, personal responsibility, and intellectual excellence. Unlike a debate match, an Ethics Bowl does not assign students opposing views. Rather, they are asked to defend whatever position they think is correct, provide each other with constructive criticism, and win by demonstrating that they have thought rigorously and systematically about the cases and engaged respectfully and supportively with all participants.
